Background

The phenomenon that the electrical property of the metallized film dielectric is restored to the electrical property before breakdown instinctively immediately after the metallized film dielectric is locally broken down is called self-healing, and the metallized film capacitor has the self-healing function. As the self-healing times and area increase, the capacitance of the capacitor decreases, and the decrease of the capacitance by 5% is generally used as the critical value of the end of life of the capacitor.

The degree and speed of self-healing of the capacitor are related to the reasonability of the metal coating, such as the thickness of the metal coating, the width of the margin and the like, besides the medium material, such as air bubbles, impurities and the like between films. Research shows that after the metallized films are connected in series, the current of the series conductive area is concentrated, the generated heat can accelerate the aging of the dielectric film, and the service life of the capacitor is shortened; and when the service life of the self-healing metallized film capacitor is over, the self-healing breakdown point of the metallized film is mostly generated at the edge of the metal coating.

The rated voltage of the capacitor is 10kV, the rated capacitance value is 500 muF, the energy storage density is 1J/cc, the discharge current amplitude is 17.5kA, and the service life of the capacitor is 40200 times of dischargeable times when the capacitance value is reduced by 3.7 percent of the total capacitance value.
