Technical Field

The present invention relates to a muffler which can be provided in a vehicle, for example, as a rear muffler in an exhaust apparatus of an internal combustion engine.

Background

In order to reduce the sound level as much as possible, it is known that: a sound-damping unit, also referred to as a "bomber" (bomden), is used, which comprises an inner tube, which conducts the exhaust gas, an outer tube, which surrounds the inner tube, and a sound-damping material, which is arranged in an intermediate chamber between the inner tube and the outer tube.

Disclosure of Invention

The purpose of the invention is: a muffler, in particular a rear muffler, for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine is provided, wherein a simple assembly of the different components or assemblies of the muffler is possible.

According to the invention, this object is achieved by a muffler, in particular a rear muffler, for an exhaust gas system of an internal combustion engine, comprising a muffler housing which has a housing shell which extends in the direction of a housing longitudinal axis and which has an outer bottom which is connected to the housing shell in each case at both axial end regions of the housing shell, wherein the housing shell and the outer bottom delimit a muffler interior and at least one inner bottom which delimits the muffler interior is arranged in the muffler interior, and comprising a sound-damping unit which has an inner tube which conducts exhaust gas, an outer tube which surrounds the inner tube, and sound-damping material which is arranged between the inner tube and the outer tube, wherein the inner tube is accommodated in an opening of the inner bottom and in an opening of the outer bottom or of the other inner bottom of the outer bottoms, and the outer tube is fixedly connected with the one inner bottom or the other inner bottom of the one inner bottom or/and the outer bottom. Since in the muffler constructed according to the invention it is achieved that the sound-damping unit is connected via an outer tube to the inner bottom or/and to one of the outer bottoms or at least one of the inner bottoms of the two inner bottoms penetrated by the inner tube, it is not necessary: the direct joining of the outer tube to the inner tube is achieved. This simplifies the construction, since, for example, a sound damping unit having an inner tube, an outer tube and a sound damping material can be produced in a simple manner in that the intermediate chamber formed between the inner tube and the outer tube after positioning thereof is filled with the sound damping material. No other measures for establishing a fixed engagement of the outer tube onto the inner tube are necessary.

The fixed connection of the sound-damping unit can be ensured, for example, by the outer tube being connected to the inner bottom or the outer bottom or the further inner bottom of the outer bottom by welding.

In order to be able to ensure a defined positioning of the outer tube in relation to the inner bottom, on the one hand, or in relation to the outer bottom or the other inner bottom of the outer bottom, on the other hand, in a simple manner, it is proposed that: an axial profile is formed in the inner bottom and/or in the outer bottom or the other inner bottom of the outer bottom, which profile accommodates the outer tube. In this case, for simple accommodation of the sound damping unit, provision is preferably made for: the axial profile formed in the inner bottom and the axial profile formed in the outer bottom or the inner bottom are oriented axially away from one another.

In this case, it can be provided in an advantageous manner that: the openings provided in the inner bottom are provided in the region of the axial profile formed in the inner bottom, and/or the openings provided in the outer bottom or the inner bottom are provided in the axial profile formed in the outer bottom or the inner bottom.

In order to ensure a fixed and defined positioning of the inner tube also in a simple manner, a neck surrounding the inner tube and oriented in the axial direction away from the axial profile arranged in the inner bottom can be provided in the inner bottom in such a way as to surround the opening formed in the inner bottom, and/or a neck surrounding the inner tube and oriented in the axial direction away from the axial profile arranged in the outer bottom or the inner bottom can be provided on the outer bottom or the inner bottom in such a way as to surround the opening formed in the inner bottom. Since the neck is oriented in the direction axially away from the respective profile, i.e. is not positioned in engagement in the interior provided by the profile, and the outer tube and also the sound-damping material can be positioned in engagement in the interior, interference of such necks with one another can be avoided, in particular, by means of the sound-damping material.

The inner tube can be fixedly connected to the neck arranged on the inner bottom, preferably by welding, or/and the inner tube can be fixedly connected to the neck arranged on the outer bottom or the inner bottom, preferably by welding. For a simple construction, provision can furthermore be made for: the neck portion disposed on the one inner bottom portion and the neck portion disposed on the one outer bottom portion or the other inner bottom portion of the outer bottom portion are oriented axially away from each other.

For a simple construction: the outer tube has a radial distance from the inner tube in each axial end region thereof, or/and the outer tube is cylindrically configured.

In order to be able to utilize the sound damping properties of the sound damping material effectively, a plurality of openings can be provided through the wall of the inner tube in the longitudinal region of the inner tube which is surrounded by the sound damping material.

Furthermore, in order to effectively reduce the sound level, it is proposed that: the sound attenuating material substantially completely fills an intermediate chamber formed between the inner tube and the outer tube.

The sound damping material may comprise, for example, a fibrous material or/and a foamed material.

The one inner bottom or the other inner bottom of the one inner bottom or/and the outer bottom can be provided in a simple manner as a sheet metal shaped part by means of the structure to be provided according to the invention.

Furthermore, the invention relates to an exhaust gas system comprising a muffler constructed according to the invention.

Drawings

The invention is explained in detail below with reference to fig. 1, which shows a longitudinal section of a muffler for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine in a simplified longitudinal section.

Detailed Description

Fig. 1 shows an end region of a muffler, generally designated 10, for an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine in a vehicle. Such a muffler 10 can be provided, for example, as a rear muffler in the end region of the exhaust system.

The muffler 10 includes a muffler housing 12 having, for example, a substantially cylindrical shell cover 14 extending in the direction of a housing longitudinal axis a. At both axial end regions of the housing shell 14, the latter is fixedly connected to one outer bottom 16, for example by crimping or/and welding, so that the housing shell 14 and the two outer bottoms 16 delimit a housing interior 18.

In the example shown, an inner bottom 20 is arranged in the housing interior 18 at an axial distance from the outer bottom 16. The inner bottom 20 divides the housing interior 18 into a plurality of chamber regions, so that in the illustrated embodiment a cavity 22 is formed between the illustrated outer bottom 16 and the inner bottom 20. For noise damping reasons, the inner bottom 20 may have a perforated portion, for example, so that the cavity 20 opens into the remaining area of the housing interior 18 and may thus form a resonator chamber.

The sound-damping unit, generally designated by reference numeral 24, comprises an inner tube 26 which guides the exhaust gas and an outer tube 28 of substantially cylindrical design which surrounds the inner tube 26. An intermediate chamber 30 formed between the inner tube 26 and the outer tube 28 is substantially completely filled with a sound damping material 32.

The sound attenuation unit 24 may be provided as a preassembled assembly for the muffler 10. To this end, the inner tube 26 can be positioned in the outer tube 28 and the intermediate chamber 30 formed therebetween can then be filled with a sound-damping material 32. The sound-damping material 32 can be, for example, a foam material which is injected into the intermediate chamber 30 after the inner tube 26 has been positioned in a defined manner relative to the outer tube 28. The sound damping material 32 may alternatively also comprise a fibrous material which is slipped into the intermediate chamber 30 or may be wound around the inner tube 26 in the form of a fibrous mat, for example, before the inner tube 26 is inserted into the outer tube 28 and may then be inserted into the outer tube 28 together with the inner tube 26.

It is recognized that: due to its cylindrical design, the outer tube 28 is at a radial distance from the inner tube 26 in its two axial end regions 34, 36, also as in the longitudinal region located therebetween, and in particular is not joined directly thereto in the longitudinal region. The restraint of this sound-deadening unit 24 is ensured via the sound-deadening material 32 provided between the inner pipe 26 and the outer pipe 28. In order to effectively utilize the sound-deadening properties of the sound-deadening material 32, the inner pipe 26 is provided with a perforated portion having a plurality of openings 35 penetrating through the pipe wall 33 of the inner pipe.

In the muffler 10 shown in fig. 1, the sound-damping assembly is arranged and held on the outer bottom 16 shown in the drawing between an inner bottom 20 arranged at an axial distance therefrom. For this purpose, the outer bottom 16 has an axial profile 38 which is dimensioned and matched to the circumferential contour of the outer tube 28 in such a way that it can be inserted with its axial end region 34 axially, for example with a slight press fit, into the axial profile 38 or into a chamber region formed therein. In the region, for example, centrally in the axial profile 38, an opening 40 is formed in the outer bottom 16, which is surrounded by a neck 42 also provided on the outer bottom 16. The inner tube 26, which projects axially beyond the outer tube 28 or the sound-damping material 32, engages with its axial end region 44 in the opening 40 or the neck 42. The dimensions of the opening 40 or the neck 42 can also be selected or adapted to the outer circumferential contour of the inner tube 26 in its axial end region 44 in such a way that the inner tube 26 is accommodated in the opening 40 or the neck 42 with a slight press fit, if appropriate also protruding slightly outward beyond the neck 42. Since the neck 42 is oriented in the direction axially away from the profile 38 and does not engage into the profile 38 or the interior provided by the profile, there is no interaction between the neck 42 and the sound-damping material 32 which is positioned in engagement in the profile, which increases assembly difficulties.

An axial profile 46 is also provided in the inner bottom 20. Which is oriented away from an axial profile 38 provided in the outer bottom 16 and accommodates an axial end region 36 of the outer tube 28 or a portion of the sound-damping material 32 which is also provided in this axial end region 36 of the outer tube 28. Here too, the axial profile 46 is preferably matched in terms of shape and dimensioning to the shape or dimensioning of the outer tube in its axial end region 36, so that the outer tube 28 can be accommodated with its axial end region 36 in the axial profile 46 with a slight press fit.

In the central region of the axial profile 46 of the inner bottom 20, an opening 48 is provided which receives an end region 49 of the inner tube 26 or is penetrated by it and is surrounded by a neck 50 which is formed on the inner bottom 20 and extends approximately in the axial direction. The neck 50 is oriented away from the axial profile 46, i.e., away from the interior space formed therein, so that the region of the sound-damping material 32 that engages in the axial profile 46 does not interfere with one another here. In particular, it is recognizable that: the neck 50 is also oriented away from the outer bottom 16 such that the neck 42 disposed on the outer bottom 16 and the neck 50 disposed on the inner bottom 20 are oriented away from each other.

The fixed holding of the different components or assemblies can be achieved by material locking, i.e. for example by welding. Accordingly, the inner bottom 20 is preferably secured to the housing shell 14 by a weld 52, such as a circumferential weld or welds. In order to ensure a sealed closure against the escape of exhaust gases, the inner tube 26 is fixed in its axial end region 44 to the outer bottom 16, preferably to its neck 42, by a weld 54, preferably a circumferential weld seam. In a corresponding manner, the inner tube 26 can also be fastened in its other end region 49 to the inner bottom 20, preferably to its neck 50, by a weld 56, preferably again by a circumferential weld seam, although this is not absolutely necessary for the reason of the exhaust gas passing through. In particular, the cohesive connection of the outer tube 28 to the base 20 in the region of the weld 58 serves for the fixed engagement of the muffler assembly 24, which weld in turn can preferably be configured as a circumferential weld seam or as a plurality of weld spots arranged at a distance from one another. Alternatively or additionally, the outer tube 28 can be fixed to the outer bottom 16 by a weld 60, wherein the weld 60 can also comprise a circumferential weld seam or a plurality of weld spots arranged at a distance from one another. It may be advantageous if the outer tube 28 is fixed in its two axial end regions 34, 36 to the outer bottom 16 or the inner bottom 20 by welding, thereby also introducing a relatively rigid connection of the two bottoms to one another: due to the different thermal expansions of the inner tube 26 and the outer tube 28, which are to be expected during operation, the inner tube 26 is not rigidly joined to the inner bottom 20 in its end region 49.

The firm retention of the sound-damping unit 24 in the muffler 10 is ensured by fixedly joining the outer pipe 28 to the inner bottom 20 and/or to the outer bottom 16 adjacent to the axial profile 38 or 46 formed therein, respectively. This can be assisted by fixedly joining the inner tube 26 with at least one of its two end regions 44, 49 to the outer bottom 16 or the inner bottom 20.

It is to be noted that: the principle of the invention can also be used when the sound-damping unit 24 is supported or fixed in its two axial end regions or in the two axial end regions 34, 36 of the outer tube 28 on two inner bottoms arranged in the housing interior 18 of the muffler 10.
