Technical Field

The invention relates to a device and a method for machining workpieces, in particular workpieces comprising glass or glass ceramic, along a predetermined machining line.

Background

Devices and methods for processing, in particular for separating or first filamentizing (Filamentieren) and then separating, workpieces, in particular workpieces made of glass or glass ceramics, along predetermined processing lines using pulsed laser beams have been known for many years.

The nonlinear interaction between the electromagnetic field of the laser beam and the workpiece with the aid of a sufficiently high intensity laser beam leads to a self-focusing of the laser beam by means of the Kerr (Kerr) effect, wherein a diameter of the focal spot which is significantly smaller than that of a gaussian beam is achieved. Due to the high intensity at the focal point, a plasma is generated in the workpiece, which has a defocusing effect on the laser beam. If the intensity of the remaining laser beam is sufficiently large, the laser beam is refocused, and so on. The non-linear focusing of the laser beam and the plasma-dependent defocusing, which are balanced with each other, by repeated application, results in the formation of a quasi "waveguide", also called a Filament (Filament). In a workpiece that is substantially transparent to the laser beam, the laser beam directed in this way modifies the workpiece along its path: filamentary variations are formed in the workpiece which can be formed in the form of microchannels with diameters in the sub-micron range by appropriate process control (e.g. burst mode of the laser source) (US 2013/0126573 a 1).

Alternatively, in the development of filamentation (filamentizing), it has been found to be advantageous to use special optical components that make it possible to form a focal point that is elongated along the axis of the laser beam (beam direction), also commonly referred to as a focal line. For this purpose, so-called axicons or lenses with large spherical aberration are used, for example (EP 2754524 a1), which have the special property that the region behind the optical component in the propagation direction (beam direction) images the laser beam component as a function of the distance of the laser beam from the laser beam axis at different focal points. A focal line is thus formed which lies on the axis of the laser beam, the length of which can be predicted by the established functional dependence. In this case, the intensity distribution transverse to the optical laser beam axis is described by the mathematical operation of a bessel function, forming a so-called bessel beam along the laser beam axis. The advantage of this method is that the filament does not need to be adjusted by a balance of self-focusing and plasma defocusing, which is complicated to set, but the energy of the laser beam is continuously introduced from all sides into the direction of the laser beam axis, so that a "continuous" intensity distribution is formed in the region of overlap along the optical laser beam axis, the specific profile of which is heavily influenced by the intensity distribution of the original laser beam. CN 102785031A describes an example of a typical intensity profile when using a gaussian beam or an ideal Top-Hat profile (Top-Hat-profile) (i.e. a partial batch constant function with function values reaching the edge of the part through a (usually sharp) continuous transition).

The intensity distribution that can be introduced into the workpiece in the original propagation direction of the laser beam has a crucial influence on the length of the filament.

When using the burst mode, the transient thermal effect of the laser beam is induced by the cumulative effect of the laser pulses introduced repeatedly at a high frequency at a certain location, which leads to permanent pre-damage in the form of micro-channels beyond the modification of the material of the workpiece: in detail, the microchannel is formed by the first pulse of a pulse train pulse sequence, and the size of the damaged area around the microchannel is adjusted by the subsequent pulses of the pulse train and the material parameters.

If the workpiece is moved along a predetermined processing line (e.g., x-y coordinates or coordinates along the surface of the workpiece, a setpoint profile) during filamentation, the workpiece may be quasi-perforated along this processing line by microchannels created adjacent at a predetermined distance. By subsequent separation processes, e.g. using CO2The thermal shock (cracking) created by the laser, the microchannels may be interconnected by cracks, and the workpiece may be separated along the processing line (US 2015/165560 a). The advantages of fracture surfaces produced in this way are their low roughness, excellent geometric accuracy and strength of the produced workpiece edges.

For workpieces having a thickness greater than the focal line length, the method can be applied to different material depths by successive offsets, even to relatively thick workpieces, for example workpieces having a thickness of 4mm to 16 mm.

A disadvantage of this method is that the conversion of a gaussian beam, which is "ideal" for the laser source, into a bessel beam leads to an inhomogeneous intensity distribution in the focal line and thus to an inhomogeneous fracture surface of the workpiece to be machined. Deviation from ideal Gaussian beam (M)2>1) It also worsens the situation. However, the top hat profile, which is ideal for the filament to be produced, is difficult to manufacture.

Furthermore, the following devices and methods are known for processing, in particular separating or first filamentizing and subsequently separating, workpieces made of glass or glass ceramic along a predetermined processing line using a pulsed polychromatic (polychromatischen) laser beam:

In the known devices and methods, the machining depth in the workpiece cannot be selectively adjusted or can only be selectively adjusted with great effort and imprecision. Workpieces machined in this way sometimes cannot even be separated along the machining line, or can only be separated imprecisely or with insufficiently separated edges, by external action, in particular by mechanical or thermal action.

Disclosure of Invention

The object of the present invention is to provide a device and a method for machining a workpiece along a predetermined machining line by means of a pulsed polychromatic laser beam. The device and the method are particularly suitable for processing workpieces made of or comprising glass or glass ceramics, such as stacks of glass or glass ceramic sheets, stacks of glass and glass ceramics of different chemical compositions, glass-plastic laminates. In particular, the workpieces to be machined should be easily, precisely and reproducibly separable along a predetermined machining line by external action, in particular by mechanical or thermal action.

This object is achieved according to claim 1 by means of a device for machining workpieces along a predetermined machining line, said device comprising at least:

-means for generating a pulsed polychromatic laser beam,

an optical assembly for generating a focal line in the beam direction of the laser beam, the optical assembly having chromatic Aberration for wavelength-dependent focusing of the laser beam (chromatische Aberration), and at least one optical filter for wavelength-dependent filtering of the laser beam,

-means for generating a relative movement between the laser beam and the workpiece along a predetermined machining line, to machine the workpiece by means of the action of the focused laser beam.

Therefore, the device for machining a workpiece along a predetermined machining line comprises the following components:

-means for generating a pulsed polychromatic laser beam,

-an optical assembly

a) Having chromatic aberration for wavelength-dependent focusing of the laser beam, an

b) At least one filter for wavelength dependent filtering of the laser beam,

for generating a focal line in the beam direction of the laser beam,

means for generating a relative movement between the laser beam and the workpiece along a predetermined machining line, to machine the workpiece by means of the action of the focal line of the laser beam (laser beam focal line).

The inventors have been able to demonstrate that with the aid of the device according to the invention, the machining depth of a workpiece can be selectively and precisely adjusted. In particular, the device is very suitable for processing workpieces made of or comprising glass or glass ceramics, such as stacks of glass or glass ceramic sheets, stacks of glass and glass ceramics of different chemical compositions, glass-plastic laminates.

In the case of a pulsed polychromatic laser beam, in particular with a specific pulse duration and a specific laser beam wavelength, a focal line in the beam direction of the laser beam can be generated with the aid of an optical assembly with wavelength-dependent focusing chromatic aberration for the laser beam and at least one filter for wavelength-dependent filtering of the laser beam, with which the machining depth of the workpiece can be selectively and precisely adjusted. In particular, the length of the focal line can be adjusted by producing different focal points.

By means of the optical filter, at least one wavelength of the laser beam can be selectively filtered such that at least at a specific position in the focal line a focal point is selectively not formed. In particular, the start or end of the focal line can be defined by single or double-sided limitation of the spectrum (introducing a side band filter (bandkanten filter) or a band pass filter). In a further embodiment, in particular, the end point (on the side remote from the laser) is adjusted, for example in a defined manner, to avoid machining the support on which the workpiece rests.

In further embodiments, the workpiece, particularly a glass-metal laminate, is processed from the glass side without modification or degradation of the metal. In another embodiment, microchannels created along the focal line are used to directly through-contact the metal layer, which may be constructed before or after the through-contact, depending on the process sequence. Typical diameters of the microchannels are preferably less than 1 μm, particularly preferably less than 500nm, most preferably less than 300 nm.

By means of the optical assembly, the filament can be converted into a bessel-type beam by color-induced conversion of the incident beam. DE 10325942 a1 and DE 102008029459 a1 propose special optics or lenses whose chromatic aberration is deliberately increased as a function of the wavelength in order to induce focusing of the beam components in the region of the focal line formed by them. The focus of these systems can be extended to a range of up to 30 cm. These systems are used in the field of high-precision distance and profile measurements or, in the case of transparent bodies, also for the thickness measurement of single-or multilayer substrates (as a difference of a plurality of distance measurements). In principle, these optics or lenses can also be used as optical components with chromatic aberration according to the invention.

In the device according to the invention, the pulsed polychromatic laser beam can be wavelength-selectively converted into a corresponding intensity distribution along the focal line by chromatic aberration of the imaging optics (optical components). By combining the spectral energy distribution of the laser source and the filters (filter functions), the intensity distribution in the working volume can be accurately adjusted along the focal line.

Detailed Description

A particularly advantageous embodiment of the device according to the invention will be described below.

The means for generating the pulsed polychromatic laser beam preferably comprise at least one supercontinuum fiber laser or comprise means for spectral broadening of the laser pulses, in particular means for amplifying the chirped pulses (chirped pulse amplification).

In the case of amplifying a chirped pulse, a laser pulse is spatially diffused along a wavelength by means of a grating and then amplified. Thin film transistor displays (TFT displays, thin film transistor displays) in front of the grating can largely block the individual wavelength ranges (under intensity loss). Thus, various regions of the focal line can be blocked (filtered) in the laser beam direction. Upon amplification after the masking, the amplifier power may be applied to the remaining wavelength range such that the power of the laser beam is proportionally reduced below the power of the originally masked laser beam in the case of the seed light source (seed). Seed injection is one of the most commonly applied techniques for pulsed lasers and optical parametric oscillators, with the main objective of achieving emission of narrower optical bandwidths (linewidths). Essentially this means that at the beginning of the pulse setup phase, light from the seed light source laser (which in continuous wave operation is typically a single frequency laser) is fed into a Q-switched slave laser or nanosecond optical parametric oscillator. Without such a seed light source laser, the slave laser or OPO typically emits in multiple resonant modes through optical amplification of similar size, and the power distribution in the multiple modes may fluctuate between pulses. If the optical frequency of the seed light source laser is close enough to the resonant frequency of a particular resonator mode of the slave device, that mode can start at much higher power than the very high power and therefore can dominate the output pulse. In this way, the transmission bandwidth is greatly reduced compared to unimpeded (free-running) transmission, and the temporal pulse profile can be smoother due to the avoidance of mode collisions

The means for generating a pulsed polychromatic laser beam preferably provide at least the following:

-average laser power 5 to 120 watts;

-the pulse duration of the laser beam is less than 1ns, preferably less than 1 ps;

-burst mode 12 to 48 ns;

the wavelength range of the laser beam is 350nm to 2400 nm.

In one embodiment, the wavelength of the laser source (the means for generating the pulsed polychromatic laser beam) is limited to a range in which the number of photons for bridging the band gap remains constant.

Suitable means for generating a pulsed polychromatic laser beam, in particular a laser source, can be provided in various ways.

For example, known supercontinuum fiber lasers emit pulses in the wavelength range 350nm to 2400nm, an average laser power of 20 watts, and a range of less than 10 ps. The power spectrum distributed in this way makes it possible to process workpieces which are transparent in the visible or near infrared range. Figure 1 shows the spectral power density of a typical white light fiber laser. The upper curve shows the profile of the average laser power of 20 watts. The lower curve shows the profile of the average laser power of 10 watts. The average power of the laser is derived from the integration.

The generation of another type of pulsed polychromatic laser beam is given by the relation between the spectral bandwidth Δ ν and the pulse duration Δ t:

where K depends on the particular pulse shape according to the following table:

here, Δ τ is a pulse duration whose value is determined as a full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the intensity distribution i (t), and Dn is a spectral bandwidth/frequency width of the pulse at FWHM.

Fig. 2 below shows the spectral broadening Δ λ of a pulse as a function of the pulse width Δ τ in a log-log representation for a central wavelength of 1064nm, based on the following calculation:

in the transition from ps pulses to fs pulses, the pulses are expected to be stretched to the order of n × 100 nm. In fact, further shortening of the pulse duration to attosecond pulses produced a white light distribution.

A disadvantage in this case is that the interaction between the first short fs or attosecond pulses and the workpiece results in less and less damage in the material of the workpiece, so that the workability or separability of the workpiece is lower and lower (due to the short interaction time, the pulses (photons) cannot couple with the photons of the material, so that no direct heating of the material takes place). In this case, compensation can be made by significantly increasing the number of burst mode pulses.

The optical component with chromatic aberration preferably comprises at least one convex lens made of quartz glass, or it comprises at least two diffraction gratings.

Fig. 3 shows the shaping of a pulsed polychromatic laser beam in the wavelength range below 800nm with an optical component having chromatic aberration, which comprises a convex lens made of quartz glass. Fig. 4 shows an enlarged view of a focal line with different focal points. In this embodiment, the 350nm and 1000nm foci differ by about 2mm, i.e. the foci of wavelengths 350nm and 1000nm are separated from each other by about 2 mm. Thus, the focus can be shifted by this distance by spectral filtering. The distance displacement can be calculated for different optical components using commercially available ray tracing programs. Ray tracing (Strahlverfolgung or Strahlenverfolgung) is an algorithm based on ray emission for calculating the obscuration, i.e. for determining the visibility of a three-dimensional object from a specific point in space. Ray tracing also refers to several extensions of this basic method that calculate the further path of the ray after striking the surface. In optical simulation software such as Zemax, the path of the field of light rays emitted from an object that is considered to be segmented is represented by the imaging optics to the detector.

FIG. 5 shows the effective focal length of the system shown in FIG. 3 over a wavelength range of 0.30 μm to 0.80 μm (300nm to 800 nm).

In another embodiment (fig. 6), the pulsed laser beam is converted into a ring beam by two diffraction gratings (BG1 and BG2), where the shorter wavelength λ 1 of the beam spectrum is located in the outer ring and the longer wavelength λ 2 of the beam spectrum is located in the inner ring. If this annular beam is then focused by an axicon or similar optics, a plurality of focal points F1 and F2 will be formed, the location of the focal points depending on the wavelength.

The filter is preferably a sideband filter, in particular a high-pass or low-pass filter.

In the beam path of the laser beam, the filter is preferably arranged in front of the optical component having chromatic aberration. However, the filter may also be arranged behind an optical component having chromatic aberration in the beam path of the laser beam (it must however be ensured that the filter does not protrude into the focal line). Multiple filters may also be arranged before and/or after the optical assembly.

The plurality of wavelengths may be selectively filtered by a plurality of filters such that the focal line is selectively unfocused at a plurality of locations.

The use of sideband filters (high pass and low pass filters) limits the outer position of the focal line, and band-stop filters allow various regions of the focal line to be blocked or disabled. The combination of the spectral intensity distribution of the laser source and the filter curve of the filter used determines the intensity distribution of the laser beam on the incident side of the optical component with chromatic aberration (mathematically: calculating the convolution integral of the laser intensity distribution and the filter curve). At the exit position of the light beam, the chromatic aberration of the optical component determines the intensity distribution achieved.

The workpiece to be machined is preferably at least partially transparent for the wavelength range of the laser light used, in which range the transmittance of the workpiece is greater than 85%, preferably greater than 90%, particularly preferably greater than 95%.

The workpiece to be machined comprises in particular glass, glass ceramic or plastic.

The device is in particular a device for introducing a separation line along which the workpiece can be separated by external action, in particular by mechanical or thermal action.

The device is particularly used for processing workpiece stacks or workpiece laminates made of the same or different materials.

to create a focal line in the direction of the beam,
